Valve adjustment problem!! HELP!!!!!!!

the trick on the tdc pin is to remove it first. remove the oring on it, the reinstall. moves very smoothly. Just make sure to reinstall the oring. I find the oring likes to bond to the engine.

Ok, so when you attempt to turn the engine via the Alt pully nut, you turn it COUNTER_CLOCKWISE???? I didnt even try that, figured the nut would just come loose........still have the bruise on my palm from using the harmonic balancer.. what a PITA!

Yup, alt nut method is way easier than the damper method. I use a gear wrench to make it easier yet. I have yet to back the alt nut off and I've fussed with my valves 3-4 times. I actually bought the barring tool and ended up giving it back to the Snap-On guy 'cause the alt method was easier (and free-er)

maybe I should re-do mine,, never was sure if I got them "right"...using the harmonic balancer and trying to watch for the intakes just starting to open was awkwards to say the least...
Not sure teh "name " of the method, but it was one of the ones in teh Tech Article. When the intake just starts to open, adjust the valves on the cylinder that is prior to the one you are watching in teh firing order...

I Did It!
Got at those valves today thanks mainly to that procedure posted by 59Ford, ...my book has something along those lines but it didn't make sense to me like the "Companion Cylinder" description did. I scribbled a little chart and hung it under my hood to stay on track. WAYYYY quieter and smoother now, ...I'm thinking there's enough improvement that I might see some fuel economy from this. Chalk up another win for DTR ...

I did my valves today and wrote a post raving about the improvement I found in noise and smoothness. If I'm duplicating here sorry, but I find no sign of the post, complete with emoticons, ...anyhow thanks again to 59Ford for the "Companion Cylinder" description and I'll put in a word toward a "Sticky Award" for this, ....

For Chrisreyn: I found that turning the engine backward wasn't that hard but a lot of wrenching necessary to get a 360 crank turn. I don't have a 7/8" socket so had to use an offset boxend .. Also a blanket rolled up on the cowl to help the old knees as I was perched up there for quite a while. I turned the engine several times to recheck the gaps as I'm prone to error. Somebody mentioned turning the tensioner tighter to turn the engine forward and I could do that but ran out of hands and really didn't need to as long as I watched the rockers as instructed in the 59Ford post. Good luck with yours, ...it's time well spend, ...
