Valve adjustment problem!! HELP!!!!!!!

Valve adjustment problem!! HELP!!!!!!!

So, the alt. bolt trick didnt work for me. on to the harmonic balancer....
I know im very close BUT now the freeking TDC pin broke off!!!! now what???
TDC is a project in itself for the average 2 hand, 2 arm blessed person. On top of the fact my knuckles have been removed from the fan, the socket keeps slipping and on to the cross member go my fingers! I managed to bust the pin off by tapping the stupid thing to make sure it was free to press in, i must have missed TDC 3 times now.

if you look in the sticky for the valve adjust directions there is a method in there that doesn't use the timing pin.

Here's a tip for doing valve lash adjustment that will make it go faster...

1. Turn over the motor with a 7/8" socket on the alternator pulley. One other thing, to locate TDC @ #1, watch #6 until it's at crossover (one rocker going up, the other going down at the same time). This is called the "companion cylinder" method. Adjust the proper valves, then rotate the engine over until #6 is at TDC, which means #1 will be at crossover. Gap the intake valves at 0.010" and the exhaust at 0.020."

When at TDC for #1, check: Intake 1, 2, and 4 Exhaust 1, 3, and 5

When at TDC for #6, check: Intake 3, 5, and 6 Exhaust 2, 4, and 6


This one works good.

OK, I figured the crossover deal. I want to do the 8/18 adjustment so I left well enough alone for fear of breaking anything else.
Unfortunatly the Alternator method didnt work for me, the pully just turned inside the belt. I will make another attempt at it hopefully this weekend. Thanks!

You can only turn the motor backward with the alternator nut.

Thatd be clockwise, right? Which way on the Alternator nut? im assuming clockwise on the nut too?

NO! backwards is counter-clockwise.

In the above directions it doesn't matter if you go forwards or backwards.
As long as you make sure you are in crossover.

lol, yeah. Greg came over and gave me a hand went 8/18 on the valves. I'll be darned if the thing didnt turn over nice n smooth on the Alt. this time going counter-clockwise at the alt.!! I have a couple that were a little on the loose side of things maybe pushing .12, and .22. I did notice its a little quieter now.

Not to be a stick in the mud but I cheated there . ..

I put an old torque wrench to the belt tensioner and applied enough pressure to reverse the engine using the alternator nut. It works.

When I mess with the IP, I pull the timing pin out and have the wife watch for the pin-hole while I turn the engine as described above. She sees the hole via a dentists mirror (A mirror on a stick if you will).

Still aggravating.

yoo da man 59FORD, ...I just turned my engine (backward wannadiesel) with a 7/8" Gedore offset boxend. Now there's nothing holding me back from doing my valve adjust 'cep fear and good judgment. Couldn't turn clockwise (cw) for some obscure reason I couldn't suss at the time, but if necessary I'll use BC847's trick with the tensioner.

I not be da man, it me 2 years to figure out the KSB deal

I have just been adjustin valves for about 40 years.

It does work on all engines as long as you can count high enough
