Vacuum pump, how hard to rebuild?

I've got a 91, intercooled that a friend just bought with a leaking Vacuum pump. this is not the style with the two large diaphrams. Autozone quoted me $350 for a new one. I didn't ask but i assume there is a rebuild kit. Has anyone done this? and how hard is it? Thanks

Wink Look In The Sticky

I think Jim Lane, or some other kind soul, just recently posted a real good description of the job, complete with plenty of pictures.

I just did the seal kit on mine. Its really easy. As far as rebuilding the actual vacuum pump part, all thats in there is 4 vanes, two bushing, and a check valve(so it holds vacuum after shut down). It doesn't pull any vacuum? Maybe the vanes are chewed up and stuck. On mine the input shaft is bent pretty good, and it still pump well. Also, you can get the 94-95 one cheaper from a parts house. Unless I get a used one, thats what I'll do.

I haven't put my vac gauge on it yet, but there are NO power brakes and the heater takes forever to switch over. Also there is a major oil leak coming from the pump.... power steering still works great though.

I was having the same vacuum problems a few years ago, but it turned out to be a leaky brake booster diaphragm....

Reseal the vac pump with the $10 Cummins kit. (thank you, stillsmokin- I ahve bought several kits, but never wrote down the p-n). It is EASY to do- there are about 10 parts in the entire pump. I did it in 20deg weather in my driveway one night after work, with the neighbor keeping me company.

Then once you have it sealed back up, check all your vacuum lines going everywhere. Pay special attention to the vacuum sensor on the left inner fender by the hood spring. Had that break on my 91 and I got a hard pedal.

You can get a new one from the bay for ~$380. You couldnt pay me to run a parts store reman vacuum pump.
