Vacuum Brake Booster Q?
My booster was leaking bad, couldn't hold 3" vacuum with the booster connected but went straight to 28" with the booster disconnected. So I took the booster out and bench tested it, just to be sure. Still holds no vacuum, but I could not see or hear where it was leaking. I took it apart, no holes in the diaphragms, so I think it must have leaked around the shafts.
When I ordered a new booster they told me there is a $50 core charge so I put the old booster back together. I vacuum test it and now it is working and holding vacuum!
I'm going to put the new one in when it gets here.
The question is: do you think that the old booster is bad?
Just wondering what you think.
Good Day,
JP.

quick answer?-- yes, it is... when you reassembled it, you may have repositioned teh worn/bad area enuff that it will owrk for a bit, but it iwll go out again..
best go ahead as planned and replace it.. brakes are no place to be cheap in!

I put the new booster in last night. The brakes work far better than they ever have, at least as long as I have had the truck. I would say that they are now in the acceptable range. I would let my kids drive it now.
The brakes are still not real tight which is how I like them. Next step will be to replace the flex lines.

Best change you can make is upgrading the rear brake cylinders to GMC 1-ton...
There's a link around somewhere.
That gives you lots larger pistons and lots better stopping.
