Question Under Bed Aux. Trans Cooler

I was looking at a pic the other day of an under the bed trans cooler, it seems kinda far away. It looks like its all the way back near the fuel fill area. I would like to install an aux. fan mounted job or just a plane plate type under the truck. Is there any reason why I cant mount it under the cab closer to the tranny?

no reason you cant ,but you might get heat coming up from it in to the cab!

Thanks Rebal, One more question. I was thinking of the B&M plate type w/ fan, it has the 1/2" npt fittings, would this be suitable?

I mounted mine right under the drivers seat, on the bottom of the cab. In hindsight I sort of wish I would have mounted it under the bed, I may still move it there, to get a little bit better/cooler air flow. Only problem, is that the fuel tank gets in the way, so I've got to be careful routing lines and what not around that and the driveshaft.

There is another place I've thought about installing a cooler. There'sa nice opening in between the front bumper and cross member. The area looks big enough and the cooler lines that go to the little aux. cooler are only 1-1/2' away that you could tie into. Just a thought.

Here is how I mounted mine. It is a Derale atomic cooler for towing up to 30,000 gvw with 1/2 lines in and out. I had a hose shop put some 6AN fittings on some 1/2 300f high temp tranny hose. I used the crossmeber with the fan blowing straight up. I also used a circuit breaker and a relay with dash mounted toggle switch. You would not belive how much heat this little thing takes out of the truck when pulling. Yesterday I pulled a H200 bobcat on a 18' trailer 80f temps with the A/C on and the engine never moved much past the first mark, without the cooler fan running the engine gets close to the second mark. If you leave this thing running all time the tranny always shifts harder like they ussually do on a cold morning. The frame and underbody does get hot to the touch when driving through town but my A/C works so good you dont notice it in the cab. My trans fluid used to be almost black after two or three good trips but I have about 5 trips in now and the fluid is still as bright pink as the day it was pored in.

I have that B&M plate cooler, dont remember the model but it was the biggest one summit had. I mounted it in the front drivers side corner of the bed outside of the frame rail. It could probably use a shroud, ill get around to it someday..
