Ulsd + Cold = funky Fuel gauge

Ok guys just something to remeber out there. I have ran several tanks of ulsd with no problems other than fuel guage acted funny. I just assumed the sender was getting clean with the new fuel. The guage read accurately just would fluctate the first two tanks i ran. So on the way to class this morning I said " Ok I am going to fill up after class and I know I am good cuz no low fuel light". I pull into school and run out of diesel . Its like 8 degrees . So I went into class and my dad brought me some fuel and we had to pull start it )thank goodness I have a manual. So just a word of warning to be careful of your fuel gauge now. I know it wasn't gelled cuz I had plenty of addditve stuff in it.

my rule of thumb is at 1/4 tank or 400 miles I'm looking for a gas station.

Can't think of why ULSD would cause the fuel gauge to malfunction. Did you fill up after you ran out? And how much did you put in?

I didn't have time to complety top-off this morning but I put in 20 gals and my dad put in 5 gals. And when the low fuel light comes on I can usually squeeze in 26.5-27gal. But my gauge would sometimes swing back and forth a good bit.

Hmmm. Does sound like it was empty. Could be a bad connection somewhere. I didn't notice where you live, but the salt plays edited by admin with exposed wires and ground connections. I just don't see how the different fuel could degrade the actual sending unit though. Maybe it wore out from not enough lube!

If it's like the senders I'm familiar with, it's basically just a variable restistor that slides back and forth with the float. If there is anything wrong with the sender it's prolly just worn out from normal age/use. I'd drop the tank, pull it and attach an ohmmeter to see how it reads.

Why is it every time someone has a fuel-related problem they start screaming ULSD?

At 400 miles I would have been empty on the back of a wrecker for 80 miles.

Nope Neither . Good thing for my tiny tach and some calculators on the internet so I can at least have an idea of how fast i am going.

I have had the truck since November, 13.8 is the BEST milage I have been able to get, as of now we have no idea why. The only thing I have done to it is straight pipe it and one turn on the power screw. I bought this truck because they are supposed to get such good milage, I'm not happy with it.

Actually, it was a gelling problem that you were seeing on your gauge. ULSD gels much easier than LSD did, and the standard amount of anti-gel additive isn't enough. You have to double or even triple-dose to prevent gelling. I saw the same fluctuations in my fuel pressure gauge until I increased my additive use to a triple dose.

Haloman, how cold was it in KY the other day when you had the problem, 8 degrees? Could be gelling.
