two lift pumps working together

Hi was changing out my fuel filters today after some power loss issues and guy down the road stops by to chat[96 ctd] we chat about the lift pumps failing he pulls out a little carter inline electric demand fuel pump made for diesel ....$85,,, 7 to 9 lbs pressure[part # is out in my truck but can post if anybody wants it] his plan is to hook it up near the tank and have it pump to the mechancal pump his treory is that it would take all the stress from main pump and full 9 lbs fuel pressure on hard pulls sounds good in treory but want do you guys say??? ps my truck hauls a** again with fresh filters

Pushing fuel to the our mechanical lift pump actually works against it. The LP only can open/close so fast. You wear out the LP pushing fuel to it. This was covered in tdr recently. Bushy can fill in more. Now the electrical LP's, yes, great idea for a pusher.

Well I have been running a Carter pusher pump for a while now with no i'll effects. It makes sence though that having a constant pressure against the oem lift pump would cause it to go out faster. When I was running just the Carter I would vapor lock the pump because I was running out of fuel. Now that I am running both of them I have not run it out of fuel even with my new injection pump. Oh well what do I know I dont put enough power to the ground to even spin my tires. Just my 2 cts. I do plan on changing mine around when I get time, but I dont know what I want to go to yet. When I decide I will let you all know.

Yeah I was running just the electric LP for a long time, but then I went to a couple of dyno events and I vapor locked the motor. It wasnt flowing enough fuel to the injection pump. I did check the pressure and I was seeing 15psi at idle and 10psi at WFO. I dont know why it couldnt keep up. So that is why we hooked up the oem lift pump, and its been fine ever since. I still need to check the psi though. For all I know I could be in the danger zone. I would hate to eat my injection pump by running it out of fuel. I think I might try a Fass system and then just unhook what I have now and tape everything off so I dont get dirt in it. That way if anything goes wrong with the Fass I can just hook up the old system and keep going.

Before my next dyno event I want to get something else on there so in the next couple of weeks I will be reading up. I think my next dyno event will be Piers's big event so I want to have it done before then. So I have about a month to get it done. I also won a dyno tuning session from my last dyno day. So if I can get everything done I will go back and fine tune my motor before I leave to go up North.

Ok today I ordered a Fass pump and a manual fuel pressure gauge. I did not get the complete Fass system. We are also going to redo the fuel lines from the inside of the tank all the way to the fuel filter. I got the one for the 24 valve, because it should run about 15-16psi. I know that you can get different springs to regulate the pressure. Cummins says that you should have no more than 10psi max inlet pressure for the VE pump. I know that it will be kind of pushing the limits, but on the test stand we set the inlet pressure for 20psi and it did not leak. I have checked my pressure before and it was at 15psi and it seamed to be just fine. I guess time will tell.
