TV/Kickdown cable adjustment questions and how sensitive?

Alright so I was talkin to my friend, and he has an 87 chev with a 700 r4 and if you adjust the tv cable wrong on that tranny, it will trash it real quick. He's done it beforeand trashed a tranny and said he had to have a transmission place adjust it on the next one. Is these a518s as sensitive as that? Or do you have to do it exactly right, or can you just set it up to your own liking and it'll be fine? I printed off the adjustment in the sticky, and do i need to set it to factory specs or can I adjust it to where i want and the tranny will still be fine? I'm gonna turn my tranny pressure up, adjust the bands, and change the fluid this weekend and then will probably mess with my TV cable to get it setup just right for next weeks dyno. And do you tighten it to make it shift sooner and loosen it to shift later or is it the other way around? thanks.

There was a sticky on this, but I think the link is dead...

Unlocking the pawl and sliding the mechanism forward will make the throttle linkage push on it sooner. This will make it shift later. Adjusting it aft (so there is a gap, or an increasing gap between the after part of the cam hole and the linkage), it will shift earlier. The stock settings are something like 1/8" gap.

Yeah i printed off the one in the sticky, and will probably adjust it. But it won't hurt my tranny if i set it to where i want it instead of factory specs?

As long as you make it more agressive, and not less aggressive(more gap).
You can damage clutches with not enough kickdown(throttle pressure).

SmokinBlack, I did this to my truck over 4 years ago. I like my shifts to go longer between shifts, and along w/ the cable adjustment I adjusted the TPS to allow kickdown. Kickdown will only come with an agressive stomp, at high PRM's, and w/ a slight grade(won't work going downhill, and sometimes not on flat road).
After 4 years, no problems. I change ATF religiously every 12,000 miles, and auxiliary filter the ATF. 150,000 on the odometer.

I have a question. I've read the sticky about this and this thread and both say there should be a gap between the linkage and the shaft. I've only had my truck for a little over 6 months. The PO had the trans rebuilt and had a shift kit put in. I have not noticed anything unusual about the unit. It does shift very firm and strong. 1st to 2nd can like slam into gear when driving really easy but when you are a little faster accelerating its smooth.

Anyways I noticed on my truck that there is no gap in the linkage and in fact there is a spring attached from the transmission linkage to the throttle linkage on the IP that keeps the cable tight.
is the normal?
If I read the thread correctly that should prolong the shift points.
My truck shifts right now at 1-2 around 15kmh and 2-3 around 40km. Is this where it should be shifting or should I adjust it?
Thanx for the help guys
