Turbo question
I am thinking about a turbo upgrade what is better doing the 60mm upgrade to my stock turbo or swapping to an he351? The truck is mostly a toy I don't tow much at all.

For the price, go with the 351. Newer technology for a little more than the upgrade as opposed to just a bigger comp. wheel and housing on a turbo of older technology.

I think with what we saw on Joe's truck, the HE351 has too small of a hot side for alot of fuel.....
Unless of course you got Head studs to hold the crazy boost.

I was going to go with a HE351, but decided that the 9cm housing was just too small for my application. Went with a HX35 instead with a 12cm housing....still have to rebuild it but it's coming.

HE351 should give you all the power/boost you need and be able to cool it better than an hx35, hx40 or a 60mm upgraded h1c. Plus you get the screaming fast spoolup. I could run 40 lbs of boost through mine with stock i/c injectors. I miss my he351...

Dont you have to have the electronics for it to work ? If this is a straight bolt on....where do you find them. I am looking for a hx 35 w or something comparible as mine has high mileage and in need of a change.

Uses a 12v solenoid which can be removed and capped, use a boost elbow in its place.
The thing people forget about the 351 with the small 9 housing is that it has a 4'' outlet VS the 3'' outlet of stock, hx35, etc. The turbo can move alot more volume through a 4'' outlet instead of a 3'' so you cannot compare just the housing size as they dont correlate to each other.

I believe so, Someone would actually have to do some area and flow calculations to be sure but many have reported it flows/cools better than a HX35/12. if nothing else it would be equal plus you get a better/more modern compressor wheel with the 351. Also the 351 has an open exhaust inlet, not divided like the predecessors so it flows better there aswell.

I think it looks better on paper than it really is. yea it has a 4.25" exhaust outlet, that makes for a special adapter flange needed which is $60
I just installed a HE351 on a friend of ours truck, and he called me and said he is not liking the lack of high way performance with the tiny housing. He said if you're going like 70 and punch it, it no longer gives you that hit it did with the h1c.
Unless you can figure a way to get the wastegate to work, i wouldn't do it. your truck has too much fuel you will be in the same position where you are turning the fuel down to decrease the boost
if you clock the compressor housing the littlest bit, the wastegate no longer lines up, you would have to get creative.
And comparing a Baby h1c and he351 on the bench, since i had them both apart.....the exhaust turbine wheels are 99% identical. so it's like a tiny turbine in a tiny exhaust housing- makes for insane drive pressures too, i'm sure.

run the wastegate off drive pressure with a spring like I did. Its not that hard people, put it on and figure it out the way you want. Still one of the best cheap upgrade turbos for a 1st gen out there I think, and the hp numbers can prove it.
it is a 4" outlet, just find a stock 3rd gen downpipe for cheap or free, cut the flange off, weld it to your 4" downpipe and put a 4" v band clamp on it and your golden

I have a 60mm GDS with a 16cm housing and like it really well, i can't say what it did by it's self because i did a P/S intercooler and 3in cooler tubz at the same time.
what i do know is that my truck would melt down on a 75mph run (1600+++) and after i did the three things 1250 is all i can get out of her now.
and the difference was like night and day.
