Turbo info needed

In the process of doing my crew cab conversion and im a while from doing the motor mods that i want to do but i try to think ahead and plan so heres my question. Would like to have a drivable 300ish horsepower when im done one of the "recipes" i was given included a 62/65/12 or 14 turbo but what i would like to get suggestions on is a good brand and maybe the best place to get it. Also is there a donor vehicle out there that might have something like this on it see others talking about trucks from like CAT and so forth. As always thanks for the input.

That s300 variant Biltit lists above is a little overkill if you're only going for about 300 hp. I think a better approach would be picking up a used HX-35 with a 12cm2 housing and rebuild it with a slightly bigger compressor wheel. You'd end up with a hybrid HX-35/40 like this one:

Only cheaper.

12cm2/Compressor housing w/ 60mm wheel

I bought each part seperately from Gillett and only have $550.00 in a new (genuine holset) turbo and compressor housing with 60mm wheel. Haven't got the new compressor on yet but the 12cm2 turbo spools almost instantly and the temps are still reasonable. The new Compressor housing/wheel should reduce temps and increase boost.

http://www.gillettdiesel.com/turbochargerspartsandupgrades-2.aspx

Everything was a bolt on with no mods. Including the 4" Diamond Eye exhaust.

Just the way I went................

Let me get a little technical or at least show my ignorance. In the above link they offer a 60mm compressor not a 62 what would be the advantages or disadvantages to either 60 or 62mm and also what about wastegated or non-wastegated?

Compressor Wheels.....

I'm no expert by a long shot but here is my understanding/opinion. Take it for what it's worth (FREE)

The stock wheel is 54 mm, if I'm not mistaken, and 60mm is as big as you can go with our style turbos. I don't know or have I heard of the 62 you speak of but it could be out there for later model turbos.

The bigger wheel basically pushes more air thru the cooler and in turn into the intake thus creating more boost along with allowing better exhaust flow, which reduces the EGT's. That is my understanding. The 12cm2 turbo that I'm running spools up must faster than the old 21cm that was on it but.......It is also a smaller size and so restricts exhaust a little more than the 21cm. The bigger compressor wheel off sets this restriction, says some.......

Anyone more knowlegable than I, please feel free to add or correct this..

I just put a 3rd gen turbo on mine, 60mm compressor wheel/9cm2 exhaust housing.

I don't think any 2nd gen turbos are bigger than 60mm compressor wheels.

Could you use a third gen and change the exhaust to a 12cm?

I dont know, dont think you need to though. It has a small housing but bigger exhaust outlet so it breaths like a bigger housing would. It also has an open plenum in the exhaust VS a divided like the earlier ones.

With the 5 spd you will want a smaller housing.

Bolts to the manifold fine, IC piping needs to be modified and exhaust flange or new downpipe is needed. Also the wastegate needs to be tack welded closed as you have to clock the compressor housing.

See here for some pics:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...t289293p5.html

These pics are of it before it was clocked, did not use the silicon IC hose.

I have not towed with it yet but many run it and find it is fine for most towing, seems to work pretty well on the 3rd gens so it should work even better on a less fueled 1st gen.

It has been 'touted' the best turbo upgrade (on the cheap) for 1st gens.

Would the 3rd gen turbo work well with the usual pump mods and say 5x14 injectors and a 4inch exhaust?

Yes i think so. You would have to research on the injectors though. I haven't looked much at injectors yet.

I have a 4'' exhaust going in shortly.
