Truck won't go fast, over 43 mph
To make a long story short, I am towing my 32' gooseneck across the country due to me moving to Cali. First half of my trip went smooth, cruise at 60, hills between 45-55 and as soon as I crest the hill right back to 60.
900 miles later the tranny fluid (which I had a shop check before I left and I didn't go back to double check) is now 2 quarts low. I was shuttering in 1st and reverse. After filled back up (properly) 1st and second work and shift fine and I have power to the wheels, third however is another story. I hear my engine revving but can't get over 43-45. After a hill second revs out at 30, it shifts to third and I wait for the momentum to push me down the hill to make 45 again.
Please help, truck is parked on NM and is awaiting to be fixed before I finish the drive.
Any thoughts??

The trailer was weighed in at under 10k loaded. It was only half full. You think it's a transfer case before transmission issue?
I figured I cooked something, especially 2 qts low on tran fluid, just don't know what

Sad to say you have either cooked the clutches or TQ what Transfer case do you have ? And what Part of Ca. are you heading to ?if your on I 40 and still in NM you will have 2 good climb's ahead of you still If you have a 205 then I would rule out a Transfer case problem I believe it's Deep inside transmission
if your useing fluid it may be as simple as you have blown a rear seal do some checking under truck

well I think that's a 205 but might be a 203 easiest way is do you have lock out hub's ? if you do then you have a 205 if not it's 203 .Either way it's your trans because if it was transfercase you would hear loud popping noise or grinding . if you go down to 10 you Still have a couple hill's to pull maybe not as rough as 40 but still a hill .how Dark is fluid in trans ? and does it smell Burnt ? if it smell's Burnt it on it's way out sad to say . What part of Calif are you heading tward's ?

If I needed a new trans, was there ever a 3 spd with o/d or 4 spd? I figure if I need to replace the trans and there was an easy swap worth doing that could get me better highway speeds and still tow now would be the time

Well how soon are you going to drop a diesel into the truck ? if it's Fairly soon I would say band aid it to get you into ca then start looking for a part's truck should be Easy to find PM me when you get ready and I will help with part's I am working on a Longbed Crewcab conv. right now
I would definitely just try to get it home then repair it if possible when your on the road broke down it feel's like the shop's Know it and take advantage of it
