My 90 Cummins truck just quit the other morning going to work. It just shut off and would not restart.. I changed the fuel filter and still nothing.. I bought a new lift pump and put on it, and waiting for the battery to charge to try it again.. It did fire on starting fluid .. What could be the problem if its not the fuel pump ?

fuel shutoff solenoid, very common problem.

That must be mounted on the injection pump with the single wire going to it ?

Yep, the screwed in piece, not the bolt on one on the side, that is the KSB.

Make sure the wire has a good connection at the fss and make sure it is getting power.

Wouldn't help to change the shut off solenoid if a fusible link or ignition switch, or even just a loose connection is keeping it from getting power.

The most common problem with the fuel solenoid is the quick disconnect terminal on it quick disconnects.

I have even rigged up a wire that clips to the FSS and has a alligator clamp on the other end for the positive battery post.
I hook it up, then start the truck, you pull it when your done.
The truck was a parts / yard plow and the wiring had been HACKED by the PO.
If you ran a quick wire to the FSS and it starts, you know you have a good FSS and it is in the wiring somewhere.

There is power going to the FSS but no start.. Guess I have to order one.. Pricy little bustard too !

You can gut the fss (pull out the plunger) and use the manual shutdown lever, this will verify it is actually the fss before ordering one.

Ok I can do that but where is the manual shutdown lever.. I took the fss off and checked it out then spun it back in
