Transfer case shifter vibration and noise
Hi all,
Driving down the road the transfer case shifter has a lot of noise. Rest your hand on it and the noise goes away. There is a bit of vibration but it doesnt seem excessive. Also in reading, arent you supposed to be able to shift into 4-high on the fly. Right now when i try and shift it all there is in grinding. It does go when the truck isnt moving. Now I know this is a newb question, but is there a proper way to shift into 4x4?
thanks
Brad

When rolling, everything should be going at the right speed to just click into 4WD while rolling, not under hard acceleration or braking. If not, something's wrong.
Front hub broken or not engaged
Different differential gears
Different size tires
A tire is spinning or sliding (usually ice)

An NP205 doesn't like to shift into 4WD "on the fly" It wasn't designed that way. Some people claim they can shift it in while moving but I never do.
Easiest way it to shift it when stopped. look on the top side of your driver side sun visor and there was a decal with 4WD operation instructions.
As for the noise,

Or do like I did and hang a heavy winter glove on the stick.

Thanks for the thread ofcmarc. The procedure on the visor says that I can shift into 4 hi anytime. Its the 4 low that you have to be crawling. Thats what has me thinking something is wrong with the syncro.

I've shifted in to 4 hi up to 20 mph, but don't like to with the np 205. If you try it, shift as quick and smooth as you can. Like shifting some of the old tractors. Trying to shift it slow will just end up grinding.
