transfer case fluid and Amsoil questions

Does my '92 transfer case use atf or gear lube? I have been told both. Also I am getting ready to put my rebuilt tranny back in. Should I use Amsoil?

Personally i would just us plan old 80/90w for the t-case. i believe the FSM said that you could us ATF i cold climates but it can get as cold a -40*here and have had no problem with 80/90 when it gets that cold I'm shore that it would help tho

ATF+4 it a good synthetic lube but isn't required......theres probably just as good syn out there for half the price!!!!

IMO Amsoil is great stuff. But...expensive. I use it in lots of stuff, but I opted not to use it in my automatic transmission because of A. the cost and B. I felt it gave "spongy" shifts. The fluid is supposedly universal, but I think it acts more like Dexron fluids than the +3 stuff our trannies are supposed to use. I also have a douple deep pan and the thought of ponying up 9 bucks a quart for the 20 quarts the system takes didn't excite me. I've decided, in this application, just to just to use the ATF+3 and change it when I'm supposed too. Keeping the fluid cool goes a long ways to helping too.

Exclamation

ATF+4 is now available in Walmart for less than 4 bucks a quart. Anything else will do more than just give you spongy shifts if you run it long enough in a trans that calls for Chrysler +3/+4.

The friction materials in those units are designed for the +3/4 spec fluid requiring a special Lubrizol FM additive. It has only recently been licensed for production and distribution outside Chrysler channels. That is why the price is down to something more reasonable now.

Use anything else at your own risk.
