Question Trans Line Canister?

I noticed that the hot line from my trans runs up through some sort of canister and then doubles back to the cooler and then back to the trans. My question is what's that canister do? It looks like it might be tied into the engine cooling system? As always all help is appreciated!

So the trans fluid actually runs through two coolers on my truck?

Yes! The heat exchanger, or "the canister", does most of the cooling.

Isn't the "exchanger" more for "warming" in winter?

Well, it does both really. Heats and cools. So maybe it's a temperature normalizer?

i pulled mine off(or actually bypassed it) back when i had a slush box. my trans temp seemed to drop a good bit. i dont need to worry about heating it, it gets to 130 in the summer, and the coldest its been this year is around 40.

Those heat exchangers provided alot more benefit back in the day when conventional Dexron ATF was more susceptible to cold temps. I can remember pulling out on a really cold sub zero day and the trans just refused shift for the first few miles because it was too cold. Nowadays with ATF+4 or other newer synthetic ATF it's not gonna make that much difference. I wouldn't worry about it unless I lived way up north.
