Trans. Fluid for gas treatment???
I was gassing up when I was told by another dodge owner to use transmission fluid in my gas and I'd get a drastic improvement in mileage and power. He then added about 22oz. in his tank. Is this true? Are there any negative side-affects?

Re:Trans. Fluid for gas treatment???
Using ATF as an additive is a no no. Todays ATF has detergents that can shorten the life of rubber lines, o rings and very intricate parts inside the pump. Stick with what you know works.

ATF was NOT formulated to be burnt.... it was made for other, entirely different purposes.
This recommendation comes up off and on and never really seems to go away...
If you add anything to your fuel, use a proper diesel fuel additive/treatments.

Bob
Re:Trans. Fluid for gas treatment???
I pulled up to a pump in virginia in a 94'ctd that said "Diesel" on the right side handle and no name on the left side handle. Not thinking twice, I grabbed the closest handle on the left, sniffed it, and filled the truck up.
When I went in to pay, I told the cashier $30 of diesel. She started gasping and said "Thats not diesel, THATS KEROSEIN".
I wasnt worried as i told her "Well $30 of kerosein then".
I put two quarts of dextron on top of the kerosein and got back on the road. I never had a skip, buzz, or hiccup. Didnt have a change of fuel mileage or smoke either.
And By the way, the pump was marked kerosein, but you had to walk around the pump to see it.
-RATCHET-

Also,
AMC 6 cyl gas vehicles had a warranty problem with a severe knocking in the engine. The TSB fix was to mix 50/50 atf with water and pour slowly thru the carburator with advanced throttle. The noise was caused by loose carbon in the cyllinder and the mix would break it up and allow it to pass.
Atf is also used as an oil additive to free up and quiet down noisey lifters.
-RATCHET-

Re:Trans. Fluid for gas treatment???
Thats all fine and good, but ATF wasn't designed for 3500 Psi injection and breaks down pretty hard under those conditions..
This is the oldest tale around, STAY CLEAR OF IT!!!. Do yourself a favour and buy Stanadyne or Lubetec or whatever other DIESEL additive there is out there and save your pump.

Just keep thinking, injector pump $3200, injector pump $3200, injector pump $3200, I am my own warranty station.

Use either nothing or use the stuff that is intended to be used as diesel fuel treatment. The old time remedies are good for poison ivy, stubbed toes, and 100 horsepower diesels of the old days maybe. These newer diesels with the very close tolerances and very high injection pressures need the stuff that they are supposed to use, good clean diesel fuel and maybe the correct additive. I read somewhere where a guy was mixing a gallon of gas in every full tank. I just shuddered and went to the next subject. I use Power Service with every tank full. It is probably overkill but it makes me feel good and that is all that matters.

Re:Trans. Fluid for gas treatment???
In the olden days, it may actually have helped to kube the pump. ATF was a non-detergent oil and a lot of truckers usd it. Whether or not it did anything tangible is subject to discussion. Todays Dexron III or IV is a semi synthetic oil and can do serious harm. I agree with the writers above. Use additives designed for diesel fuel conditioning. Rick

Re:Trans. Fluid for gas treatment???
Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me Soundfetish has a "gasser" and everyone is telling him to put diesel fuel conditioner in it. WRONG!!! Diesel fuel conditioner in a gasser is just as bad as ATF in a diesel.

If you have a diesel engine use a good diesel fuel conditioner.

If you have a gasoline engine use a good gasoline conditioner.

FWIW Stan

Good point Bearfoot2.
I wonder if he really means "gas" or just hasn't got used to refering to it as "Fuel". ???

1 year and 2 weeks later I still refer to it as gas occasionally.
Mainly in reference to "gas mileage" and "gas pedal",
my 9 year old son corrects me and says "It's the Go pedal Dad!" :

".... kerosene....."
I can still remember when I was real young, we had an oil stove in the house.
On cool winter mornings mom would get up, turn on the oil, and wait a coulpe minutes for some to enter the stove, then roll up a piece of paper and throw it in.....
LOLOL... one morning she did the routine, turned on the oil and got busy with makin coffee cause dad was going fishin.....
After about ... oh..... 5 minutes or so, she remembered and grabbed a piece of paper, lit it, lifted the lid, thru it into the stove, and slammed the lid down........WOOOFFFFFFF LOLOL....
The darn lid did a fast liftoff, went up about a foot, and darned if it didn't fall right back in it's hole.....
Inside of another 5 minutes that stove top was so red you could see the flames inside the stove......
Talk about needing a pyro on something, I think she coulda used more boost though.......... kerosene eh......
Thanks for the memory.....
