Trans cooler placement

Before the summer gets here I will need to install a trans cooler to help when I am towing my 7000# TT. My questions are;

Where is the best place to install a second trans cooler

Would you take out the original one that is in front of the radiator and would that help with rad temps

Where is the best place to get one

would your get a fan for it

Thanks for the info

one of the best is a bar and plate design i have one but i had to take my old one off it was leaking, but flex o lite makes one with a built in fan, just stick it any where theres room, it keeps mine cool.

I installed a big fan-mounted cooler under the bed (like the "super duty" trans cooler that was available). I have some pics here.

I'm skeptical about the bar and plate design. I've had a couple tranny builders that work on municiple and commercial tranny's (not show cars) tell me to only use tube style coolers with the largest bore you can find. If you were to hurt your tranny and feel it start slipping, the large, tube style will be less prone to plugging up and you might be able to limp it all the way home. Also, I would think the plates would be less efficient than intended, as sharp turns and restrictions in hydraulic lines create heat. Definitely replace the factory one up front. I put on a big one, and left about an inch gap between the cooler and radiator. I'd still like to get another with a fan for plowing, although I haven't had any issues yet. I disconnected my heat exchanger altogether, but the fan mount cooler in the circuit, behind the heat exchanger would be very helpful for towing. That's another place where the tranny and coolant work against each other. Kind of pointless to have your tranny fluid reheated after being cooled.

I second the under bed setup. I put something similar on my 93 350 4x4 and it worked out great.

hum i wonder why radiators arent tube design ? because they arent as effective, but any good quality cooler will work, i also run an external tranny filter ,and dont limp anywhere, if theres a problem call a buddy for a tow, trannys cant take heat at all, even a shart drive will kill one.

Well, cooling systems don't have clutches involved, causing debris to hang up inside. The coolant also isn't used perform the function hydraulics are. Not only is the debris hanging up, inhibiting cooling, it may also reduce pressure in the tranny allowing the clutches to slip more and keep building heat. I'm not saying the plate style isn't better than stock, I'm sure it is, but.......
