tranny line crossover necessary?

I have a rusted steel line up by the radiator leading to the grill mounted tranny cooler. There is a steel crossover pipe between the 2 lines right at the bottom of the radiator, can I just replace the 2 foot lines with rubber and no crossover? What's the purpose of the crossover?

Thanks guys!

The crossover works if the cooler becomes restricted, fluid then bypasses the cooler.
