Towing with strong head winds and high egts.

Yesterday afternoon I got the chance to pull a ford on a gooseneck trailer. Long story short, I was pushing a strong wind from the south and running about 65-70 mph with my egts hitting 1300 when pulling a hill. My pyro is pre-turbo. It was trying to climb a little higher but I slowed down a bit. Should I be worried or just try to keep it around that or lower?

You did right. Touching 1300 won't hurt it, but I wouldn't let it stay there, especially pulling heavy.

Time to drop a gear and slow down a bit.

Better to get there a bit late than on the back of a tow truck......

agreed, a short burst past 1200 is ok but pulling a long grade may lead to unpleasant things.

I'd pull a grade at 1200* pre turbo all day as long as it didnt over heat, but I wouldnt go 1300* more than half a mile or so.

i have seen and herd that the prob is to go in the pipe 6in after the turbo (think of a big rig truck)
and if it hits 1300* there your done
but running in the manifold i have hit 1550 down the strip and have had no probs.....yet

Running down the strip isn't as big of a deal as prolonged towing with EGTs over 1250*.

Or put in a 3200 RPM spring and do 70 in 4th.

General rule of thumb is add 300* to EGT right after the turbo and thats about where your pre turbo EGT is running. So 1300* 6" past the turbo would be more than 1600* pre turbo and run that very long it will melt the pistons.

In short bursts like drag racing under 13 seconds it pretty common to see as high as 1800* pre turbo on some. My self imposed limit for running down the track is 1600*. I just dont want to go over that. My Dmax with a Crazy Larry 230hp tune, stock exhaust, and stock air filter has got to be aproatching the 2,000* mark. I'm too afraid to actualy see.

Ah, but with the 3200 RPM spring it still pulls hard @ 70 mph.

I'm thinking about looking for a D80 with 3.31's just for the many options on lockers ect..... They would be perfect gears for a high to mid 12 second truck.

you only have one axle to change. i found a pickup on craigslist that is being parted out, its a 91 non ic with 3.07 gears and a posi in the rear, he wants a 1000 for the pair,
