Torque Converters Most for the least

I am thinking of putting a new TC in my truck but i just cant spent over a grand on something that will get trashed if the tranny ever goes south. i was wondering if there were any good "Upgrades" from stock in the $400 to $500 range?

wayne

P.S. does anyone know what tranny is in my truck?? overdrive with lock up is all i know. This is my first Chrysler product so i am still learning!

If yours is a lock up, it may be rare. They used the A618 tranny with lock up and the A518 without. Both are basically the 727 with overdrive. Check out Hughes Performance. They seem to be OK but they will most likly want to rebuild your TC. They didn't have any cores when I called them a month ago for the A518. Give them a call. You can do Google search and get their number. I think they are on the left coast.

I went with a Hughes, getting it installed this weekend, I'll let you know. I did some research and it seemed that they offered the best bang for the buck. It is true that last I knew they have no cores; however; thier shop turn around time was only a day and a half. I dealt with Matt from there, great guy. They are located in Phoenix, I don't have the number handy, but I believe thier website is www.HughesPerformance.com

Did the Hughes TC improve your mileage or reduce operating temps, loaded or unloaded?

I haven't checked fuel mileage yet but the truck will move at a lower RPM. and feels like it picked up a few HP.which it is now using instead of turning into heat. The big thing is that the transmission temperature has dropped a lot so it isn't going into the radiator and the engine temperature is down where it should be.

$299 +shipping... which from Phoenix to Indiana was a little over $30.

Hopefully I will have my truck up and going tommorow. I just need to finish plumbing in my new tranny cooler, check all the bolts, and add fluid and she'll be good to go!

I got my 15xfm Hughes over a week ago, but haven't got it put back together yet. The converter was such a brute to remove that I damaged the threads on some of the bolts, and the new ones are not here yet. i solved the removal-install problem by punch a hole on the bottom of the adaptor plate. That should make it much easier. Anyway, I am excited about seeing how my pickup will do.

don't forget to find some sort of rubber plug or something for it to keep debris out.

I've had my converter back from Hughes for almost two weeks now, just haven't had time to get everything hooked up, the tranny/tcase have been reinstalled. I finally had a day off work on friday, will get it all finished up then, and i'll let you all know a report!

I have a plug for it, so no worries, but thanks for the heads up. Got the transmission back in tonight, but there is still plenty of work to do.

Anyone ever tried the new TCI A518 converter? Seems like it should be a good piece based on their experience.
