Timing marks?
I asked Wannadiesel about the timing marks on the case and pump saying it looked like a symbol stamped on there. I couldn't see close enough to see what it was, but it definately wasn't a line. I see everybody say there are lines there...no lines on mine. I went out with the digital camera on macro and took a pic.

Looks like the year stamped on it (91)
Anybody see anything like this before?

I wonder if it's already advanced? Maybe that's why my full power adjustments seemed to work so good and I only a small black puff when I mat it.
I guess I need to add a timing tool to the toolbox before I mess with it.

I believe there are two versions of our VE's...on one the number ends in '114' (89-91.5) and on the other it ends in '205' I think it is...that is 91/5-93.
The earlier pumps used a different KSB that is characterized by two raised "stubs" on the top of the KSB body, one having the little metal line attached to it.
If your pump is not the original one then it is likely it was replaced due to problems or under the recall for some of the VE pumps.
Normally the engine data plate will tell you the plunger lift for the pump...for example it will say 1.30mm or 1.40mm or 1.25mm.... if your pump was original the index marks on the pump and the gear case would/should line up. If you have no marks on the pump flange then it is not likely the original pump. If there ARE two index marks, then it is likely that the pump timing has been tweaked a bit....by someone...

The best diesel mechanic I've ever known said (for my old 580 case backhoe) "twist it one way till it runs rough, then the other till it runs rough, then center it between the 2 points", does that work for the dodge cummins?
