you have a crank sensor. It basically tells the PCM weather or not the engine is running. It also provides a signal for the tach harness, I believe.

There is no cam sensor, just the crankshaft sensor.

My truck has a turned up pump and stock injectors and performs poorly with a lot of timing. I run 1.4 mm of lift. At 1.6 mm it is too advanced and I lose top end. I bet I'm only 1/16" or so advanced from stock.

alright guys when i end p setting the timing i think i will try an eight inch first and then see how that performs and if there is too much decrese in low end i will turn her right back. thank you all especially G1625S for putting up with some elementary questions on this dignified forum . i will remember that when im passing you someday it might be the distant future at the rate im going.....

Turning these old girls up becomes an obsession--it's a slippery slope

Advancing the timing will lower your overall boost and will also lower your peak EGT's. The engine will have more of that diesel 'rattle' that we all love You'll likely loose a little bottom end pull in favor of more horsepower on the top end. Most folks report a decent MPG gain to boot
does it help lower the engine temperature at all as mine runs real warm when pulling??

No, I'm afraid it's just the opposite With advanced timing, more of the fuel is burned in the combustion chamber, resulting in higher horsepower, but also a higher amout of heat is dumped into the cooling system as a result.

Just to add a little bit to that..............the piston sees more heat(causing extra heat in to the cooling system) but..........the pyro while tell you that you have better or cooler EGT! ya got to be a little be more carefull with pushing the EGT with the timeing bump

Flash.
