Time for a rebuild

Last week was spent in Florida. I put the Old Smokey fuel pin in it ran hotter then I would like on EGTs. I took it out and put everything the way it was. We left Fl to go to Ga. Stopped at the Flying J to catch some zzzzzzz's. We woke up and gave the truck a once over and found the dipstick pushed out and oil all over the place. Time to overhaul the motor. Now what should we do get a Jasper long block or get this one rebuilt. We want to do this right the 1st time No more leaks of any kind! Oh yeah we started to use some water head gasket again. I really want to get the most bang for the $$$$.

I would get it rebuilt so you can build it for what you're doing. Get the head o-ringed, put it back on with studs, get lower compression pistons, and get a performance cam while you're in there.

I was thinking about o-ringing the head. That sounds like a plan pistons, cam and everything.

If it was me I would stay way from Jasper. They might be able to rebuild a 350 Chevy gasser, but I'm not sure about a diesel. When my brother worked at an IH dealer and they had nothing but trouble with Jasper remans that customers had.

Thanks for the info. I think we are going to pull the motor and do some good stuff to it build it to what we need it for. If I could get everthing that I need to P-pump it I would for a reasonable amount of $$$

I don't know which pistons are lower compression, but there are some out there -- there is a shop near Pittsburgh that builds a lot of Cummins engines -- I would try getting in touch with them for a set of ceramic and teflon coated pistons, and maybe some other goodies. If I can find their site again, I will post a link for you. And of course Piers can probably help.

Are you sure you don't want to put in a C?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but I'm new to the Cummins so I'll ask it anyways. What happened that pushed the dipstick and oil out?

Too much blowby, pressure built up in the crankcase and it had to go somewhere.

Thanks for the link. we were thinking about a C too much $$$$ after said and done. Rebuilding this motor with all the goodies and putting a new oil and water pump on it would be cheaper. The HP and TQ numbers should be that of a C anyways if not more.
