With the engine idleing and listening to the turbo side of the engine I hear this faint tick tick sound can't tell if it is comming from the turbo or the manifold. any one have this on their rig?

If it was mine I'd get a mech. stethiscope for $10 or less and try to issolate the noise.

I had a diesel Mechanic listen to it and he thinks it is the valve train. I said fine you adjusted the valves 4,000 miles ago. He said that he will look into it on Tuesday next.

If the valves were set 4K ago, and it was done properly you shouldn't have any problems now... at least, not unless you "have a problem"...does that make sense???

Normally if you find them all within a couple thou during the initial set, you should check them at 10K, then if all is well, you can go a good 35-40K before checking again... rarely do they go for a walk on you unless there is real problems...

bob...
BTW, you can make a stethescope by using a wooden dowel and "touch/ear" testing, or even a length of garden hose to your ear... works great and is free....

Oh one more thing, do not let the garden hose end get too close to the fan blades.... **** near slapped myself silly once... bummed me right out...

The injectors are on the exhaust side, maybe they are getting aged, might have a bad one. You can still here them when they are functioning properly though.

I took a length of hose and listened carefully everywhere except the fan When you get to be 70 years old there are some things that jump out and say nooooooo! don't go there. The valves sound ok to me and the alternator sounds quiet the turbo just hummms. Boy I am realy mystified. It could be the clutch fan bearrings. It seems to be totally independant of the engine speed and is the same cold or hot. I may have to hit it with a hammer and replace everything that breaks .

I've noticed a strange "tick" sound coming from under my hood as well. With the windows down, I can hear a faint tick tick tick.... but it doesnt sound like it's consistent. I havent noticed it in a few days....

I tightened exhaust parts, and various bolts to see if it was something like that...maybe i got it, maybe i didn't...been rolling with the windows up and AC on these past few days...

I also hear a clatter when i turn the truck off or go over bumps...it makes the sound like a hose clamp rattling loosely on an exhaust pipe...I check everything under the truck and still can't find it.... i hate noises...

That tic tic tic sound could be evidence of a bombed truck.

AC on -- man it is still snowing up here, and I live down south compared to those maple leaf members. Don't be saying stuff like that

If the noise doesn't change with engine speed, then it isn't any of the important things it sounds like you checked. It shouldn't be an exhaust leat, but I was fooled by that once -- didn't seem to change with engine speed. Do you think it could be in the heater assembly? Did you listen to the oil filter and its mount -- I suppose it is possible that pressure regulator/relief bypass could be ticking? And could you hear it ticking on the day you had the stethescope out, just not isolated?

I don't know that was helpful, other than to lambast Jeremy over using the AC so early in the season.

Remember my name....TEXAShardcore....the weather has been in the mid 70's for a few days earlier this week and the winds have been high, so I've been clattering around town with the windows up.

After a few people have suggested the valves...I'm starting to suspect that my valves may need adjustment... Although, I don't think the noise I'm hearing is from the valves.

Park next to anotherdieseland see if you here a similar noise. Before I got use to mine, I swore I had a rod knocking. Now I can here the same ticking coming from a SuperDuty a block away. I can here it on a Cummins if I'm next to it. I really do suspect your hearing something related to the fuel system. I was also told to check the fuel return valve that can get noisy. The spring can go bad and there is a rebuild kit available. You'll have to search for the part number. I've just been too busy working on the DODGE parts on the truck, to take care of the Cummins the way I want to.
