Thinking about buying first Gen.
My brother is looking at buying a first gen , 3/4 ton, 4x4, auto with 145,000 miles for a work/ feed truck, as his d-max gets crappy mileage. He asked me what mileage he could expect with this trucks set up I told him I didn't know but would ask everyone here's opinion(the experts). As far as we know the truck is bone stock but he will probably add a dew eze hay bed. If anyone has any input on what mileage this truck might get, your input would be greatly appreciated, and maybe anything else we might want to check before purchasing truck. Thanks

I have a 92 4x4 std cab and I get in the city around 17-18 and on the hyway I get about 20-23 on a good day. As far as looking for anything when buying it just listen to the motor and make sure it doesnt have any hickups when it is idleing. Second make sure that the seller will let you drive the truck when it is cold this will tell you if it is running properly. Diesels don't like the cold as you already know. Cheack the frame to see if it is bent at all and check the drivline. Also make sure you get a chance to run it in 4 wheel drive to make sure that works properly. When you drive the truck that will tell you alot about the truck.

Ok, I know this is a Dodge board, but I like to help people save money. Tell your friend to look at a Wester's custom tune for his D-max. Dad did that, and his mpg went up from 17-18 hwy unloaded to 20-22. Plus, he got a 90 hp boost out of the tune. Towing a 2500lb camper with a 4000 lb boat from Utah to Texas, his mpg went from 12-13 to 14-15, but now he still has plenty of power to pass folks while climbing the passes out west. Now, he is no speed demon, but generally runs the speed limit or a touch under, so that will give you an idea of some real numbers. Over of the GM boards, Wester's tune get a very good rating, with similar mpg increases. Also, tell your buddy that if his truck is running a stock Allison, he does not want to go more than ~90 hp over stock.
