Thinking about buying a 1st gen
Guys, thinking about buying a 1st gen truck, just to play with. Maybe something I can fix up over time and make nice so to speak. Any recommendations on year of vehicle and what to look out for?
I'm not necessarily looking for a real nice decked out truck. I want to do that myself and do some learnin'. Any help would be appreciated...

I wouldn't hesitate to buy any year first gen. I personally like the look of the "newer" '91 and up ones, but thats just my opinion.
You need to look out for rust. I would aslo check all the fluid levels of a truck I was looking at.
try to holkd out for a 5spd too. Especially if you are looking to make it a project. It seems all the nice 1st gens are automatics...

main thing is check for rust doors and roof. fluid levels like '91 1st gen said. and ya the 5spd would be a lot better. thats my opinion though you can build up a decent a518.
all of them are great and remember on the pre 91 truck they werent intercooled.

Thanks for the tips guys. I haven't quite made the decision yet but I'm definitely leaning toward doing it. As for the configuration I'm looking for, well, probably a manual because once I get it in good shape to the way I like it, then I'll probably bomb the heck out of it.

You could bomb the heck out of an automatic first gen
You'd just need a converter and some tranny hard parts.
I'd concentrate more on finding one with a good body... you could always do tranny swaps and stuff but body work sucks.

probably one of the best deals on the planet if it is still there.
