worst case i'd say the whole engine is bad and you need a new one.
melted pistons scored cylinder wall and so on,
was there blue smoke?
how hot?
how far did you go?
how many miles on the old engine?
how cool would it be for them to buy you a new cummins?

Drain the tank, purge the fuel lines, get a free full tank of #2, bleed the system, start engine and go on your way.

there is blue smoke
i read it ruins injectors because of what the heat may do to pistons , cylinder walls, head damage, injector pump damage and screw seals...
is this true or myth???
runs like dog **** now total lack of power and smokes runs hotter but that is a stock gauge so dunno temp

that would be worst case as he asked but i bet it will run fine also but he might need new injectors and pump.
but if the diesel shop says new engine then they will have to buy him one. unless they can make reasonable doubt that he said to fill with gas. but i don't think they will fight it, like said before they arent hurting for money

maybe he couldn't read or hear when you pulled up that it was diesel, you wanted worst case,
they are sapossed to ask anyway no matter of what it says on the fuel door.
