tachometer questions
Hello 1st geners, I need some help. My dad has a 91 dodge cummins. I am thinking about trying to get him a tachometer. My problem is I don't know what the best set up would be. His pyrometer and boost gauges are isspro, so I will try to find one from them, but I need some advice on possible mounts, and also I heard something about a tach set up to run off of the alternater. Does anyone know anything about this. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Marv.

My tach is Autometer and has a pick-up that straddles the seam on the alternator. It has worked for many years.
These type tachs will work on any engine's alternator, regardless of number of cylinders, and regardless of type fuel used.

Howdy,
I really liked the SW tach W/hourmeter built in that I had on my old truck...so much so, that I bought two of them(and I still have one I don't need)!
It was the type of alternator-driven tach that you actually had to attach to one of the lugs in the alternator. Take my word for it...hooking it up sounds more complicated than it is.

I think the AutoMeter is 2 5/8", Vinny's is bigger, like 3 3/4".
Mine is on the top of the column, offset to the right as far as possible. It blocks the numbers over 85 on the speedo and the high beam indicator, but I don't like having stuff up on top of the dash.

Currently the one in my 92 is an ISSPRO tach...
But the extra SW I have is also a 3 3/4 tach.
If you notice when you sit in your driver's seat, the hood sticks several inches into the bottom of your forward vision...looking forward, I notice that the gauges I have on my dash don't even enter into my field of free-vision.
Right now I have a couple gauges (boost/pyro) slung under the top edge of the dash in front of the WIF and WTS lights...I plan on moving those to the top of the dash, and reclaiming my interior/map light.

I have an isspro 2" tach. I plugged mine into a 4-pin plug under the dash. I think that 91-93 Dodges are wired for a tach, but it may only be 92-93, I am not sure. I also got a wiring harness for it from Isspro, but I am not sure if it was even needed or not.

The plug-in unit only works on '92 and '93 trucks. If you have a voltage regulator on the firewall, you don't have the PCM that has a crank position sensor.
AFAIK, the column pods they sell for 2nd gens fit on the 1st gen trucks, at least the ones with a tilt column.

This is correct, my Bother in law just bought one from Geno's and it does in fact fit. Also it is the tilt column. Don't expect it to replace the top cover like I did, it just sits over it, you can hardly tell though it looks pretty good. I'll try to get some pictures in a couple weeks.
