Tachometer Question
Tachometer
I have a Banks tachometer that I am going to install in my truck, I am building a pickup coil for it but I need to know what does it read on the harmonic balancer, does it read the slot, or does the install kit include small magnets to induce the signal?
If there are magnets, how many are there 1 or 2 @180* apart.
I am assuming the factory CPS is a coil and not a Hall Effect Switch or is it?
Also does anyone have a, installation or wiring diagram for this tach?
Thanks Jim

Well it's a Banks and I do not think they had one that worked off the frequency being generated by the rotor like Autometer, Isspro and a couple of others.
And there is no adjustments anywhere on it to adjust it for pulley size, just 3 wires, Red, Black and White and a lamp chimney.
It is a Banks PN#63084 4000RPM tachometer.

I remember that now, I had to go back through about 350 Private Messages to find yours and then I had to find where I had put the pictures that you had sent me.
Here are the pictures of a Banks 4000 RPM Tachometer and its magnetic pickup.
Thanks to oliver92
Here is the Banks DynaFact 2 1/16" Tachometer.
Pn.#63084
Model #12B40CU
12-volts
133HZ curious as to is this the frequency at full deflection, 133hertz?
9948 possible code date for 1999
This tachometer has a plastic housing as do all of the DynaFact gauges that I have.
But my tachometer had a metal housing and a black face with a circle covering the pivot of the pointer, probably earlier vintage.
This gauge also has the typical snap or twist in lamp for illumination, I would strongly recommend installing an LED module like I did in the sticky, these housings will melt from the heat of the lamp.
This is the magnetic pickup that provides the signal to the tachometer, it needs to be mounted in close proximity of the harmonic balancer.
Not sure how this one was mounted but maybe under the front oil pan bolt?
Just another view of the pickup.
And another one.
So this is what a Banks Tachometer and the pickup look like.
If there is something you can add to this please let me know.

I just did the math. At 4000 rpm the engine is turning over 66.6 times a second. If I remember right there are two slots in the balancer so that would make the sensor read 133.3 times a second at 4000rpm.

Thanks,
I am making my own pickup coil, I have not looked at my harmonic balancer yet but I do remember seeing at least 1 slot, I am planning on installing 2 small magnets 180* apart to get the correct timing, with this frequency/ RPM formula you could probably make any 4/cycle tachometer work by adding the apprporate amount of magnets.
A lot of high performance ignition systems can be triggered by a custom reluctor or trigger wheel off the harmonic balancer, so why not a tachometer?

What about something like this Jim?

Should work with the existing CPS if you have one.
