Stock master cylinder........over 200K, think I need one?
Well, since I bought my 93' CTD last summer, the pedal has always gone very close to the floor. I just got done doing all the brakes and bearings on the pickup. I figured the pedal would feel much better........but no, it still travels within' an inch of the floor (very close). At times in traffic, I notice that the pickup still slighty creeps forward even when I have the pedal all the way down with decent force. Now........if I come to a stop and pump the pedal twice, the brakes feel much firmer and seem to stop the pickup at a higher pedal travel (less pedal distance). The pickup has the stock master cylinder from 93' and has never been replaced. The mileage is 201,000 and some odd miles. I'm just guessing that with how old the master cylinder is and the mileage.......maybe it's not so suprising that it needs to be replaced now. Anyone else agree???

Could be an old master cylinder but, have you adjusted the rear breaks? If they are out of adjustment they will effect the distance the pedal travels before it becomes effective. The looser the rear breaks, thr farther to the floor the pedal goes.

Yeah, I adjusted the rear brakes (infact I used anti-seize on the adjuster threads). I also bled the brakes too. It seems to be really spongy and the pedal almost always travels 1inch from the floor upon first brake application when I come to a stop. It just doesn't feel right.........

Yeah, I just called Napa Auto Parts. They quoted me $43.00 for a remanufactured one or $72.00 for a new unit. My good friend tells me to stay away from the reman units, they seem to have problems and the quality control on the rebuild is poor. Anyone else agree? I figured this is the best way to fix my low pedal issue.

Wow, sounds like the reman units are way cheaper at the discount chain stores (Shucks/Kragens, Autozone, etc). I figured either it works or it doesn't once I buy it.......cheap investment and easy to mechanically access. I might just buy one of these units and slap it on.

My son went through four alternators in three months from the one parts store mentioned above. Number four died on him in the middle of an intersection in Chester after he got off work at midnight. Took the fourth one back and tested number five right there in the store and it failed right out of the box. Now, he and I only buy NAPA parts. Just for what it 's worth.
