Ok got the starter off and am gettin some contacts for a guy i know. How do i get that blasted thing apart? Also why in the heck did anyone create 12 point metric junk. went to 3 stores to find one

i dont understand it why not pic one standard or metric and just stay with it. On this nut you need standard on that one you need metric. This one is 6 point thats 12point. Kinda agravates me sometimes

Metric on engine, standard on truck. If you're gonna work on the Cummins, you need a metric tool set, wrenches, sockets.
To replace the contacts and plunger, remove the 3 or so screws from the top solenoid housing. Simple hand tools for that job. There's a little ball bearing floating around inside the solenoid housing, so be careful when you have it apart, that little sucker will take off on ya and will be hard to find on the dirty garage floor under the toolbox.
Next I would remove the two long bolts that hold the main body of the starter together. Then you can look at whats left of the starter brushes. They'll be held on with a screw and retaining clip. If a high mileage starter, you'll want to replace them, heck might as well since its out. 3 brushes at about $6-8 each.
