"Starter not engaging" thread solution. What do you think?
Last week, I had a problem with my brand new starter and the old starter not engaging the pressure plate. Problem solved but I am not comfortable with the solution. I had to "relax" the Getrag from the engine plate about 1/16" and shim the starter away from the pressure plate. All is well but more vibration/movement in the engine enough to notice it in the cab at idol.
What do you think? #1 What is the cause of having to shim the starter and relax the trans from the engine. #2 What damage am I doing to the pilot bearing, clutch, etc. by running it this way?
Thanks in advance!

Have you checked crank end play.
I didn't have any helpful ideas, so I hate to be critical, but I don't like your current solution. Seems shaky to me.

Are you sure the starter is tightened properly? Loosen the starter bolts and retighten starting with the top first. Make sure starter is pulled in flush with housing.

So far, driving it at various speeds doesn't seem to be hurting anything... no new noises and the extra shaking has only happens after I get in the driveway and I can bump the throttle and it calms down to normal. I have lost one bolt out of the bell housing. I roll under it after each day of driving and that is the only thing I have seen. I just have to stay on top of that!
I hope the crank shaft end play is ok. I didn't check it when I replaced the rear seal. The old starter was fine for years and it had the same problem. On that idea maybe the pressure plate was machined to just slightly over the correct diameter.

So your transmission is not tight against the bellhousing? Thats trouble, something will break eventually. It needs to be tight so it stays as one solid unit.
Also what you are calling the pressure plate is actually the flywheel, pressure plate is part of the clutch assembly.

I'd pull the trans/bell housing and check the adapter plate bolts and make sure its lined up properly, and check crank endplay, then get your bell housing dowl and line all that back up and check flywheel teeth.....a loose trans isn't good you'll ruin the trans/clutch assembly...
