stacks.. box tubing or Round?
I've been checking out lots of peoples stack intalls and find they use box tubing. For the sake of ease and cost I like that idea. A friend of my told me that round would be better because the square would collect soot too much and get much hotter and stay hotter longer having square tubing due to sharper corners, more metal area and thicker plate. He had also mentioned that if leaves from the trees get in the bed around the box tubing and in behind it might start a fire. Along with melting my bed liner if the box tubing lays on it.
I was thinking to avoid the leaf problem or melting the bed liner I could place the box cross tubing under the bed. Although I may run into melting my fuel tank. I'm not sure what I should do.

I think the thickness of the metal will will help/hurt retain heat. The 6" square tube is going to be thicker than 6" exhaust pipe. I'm not to sure about the soot collection. In theroy it sounds like it may but real world tests would need to be done. As for sound it creates more of a muffled effect, I think it is a deeper tone, but as said doesn't have the loudness of round.
The only thing I could think of doing on the melting of bed liner and leaf fires, would be to make a sheild for the leafs and cut the plastic liner.
These would be my idea's?

Go round. You get better sound and flow. I've helped built stacks on a few different trucks, always used round. It takes some time if you build it all yourself. Everything I have seen with square doesn't sound as good.

The square is what I have and it gives it a reverb sound. Round is louder and maybe a lil easier to install. Flow is probably better on the square due to it being bigger.

Well, there may be 1 person on here that has not watched my stacks in motion so here it is once again. I also am including PToombs truck in the second link. He has a box set up.

Richie O, that is a very clean looking setup. I have a question, did you feed the 90* elbow back towards the cab to avoid cutting the bed x-member? I have done a couple different stack setups and two of my buddies run there's like yours to avoid cutting the cross member. One is a 2nd gen and the other a 3rd and both use square stock. The 3rd gen sounds really mean, real deep and it took the CR raspyness (that I personally love) out. Just wondering it that's why you did it.

Correct, I did not have to cut any braces or members. That is why it loads from the rear and not in the bottom. That 90 just dumps straight through the bed and my flex pipe hooks directly to that under the truck. I wanted as even flow to each side as possible and syncro smoke puffs so it dumps in the middle. I did not save any money by making a custom one instead of a bought set up but I like this better. ( maybe a little bias )
