Speedometer Needle "hop"
Ok. So lately Ive noticed that once I get my truck up passed 30-40mph my speedometer needle begins to hop around. It doesnt do it all the time but its getting worse. Any ideas as to what I need to do? Is the speedometer cable just lose or something?
Any tips would be great.
Thanks.

Speedo is electric. The last time it happened to me it was the sending unit, for lack of a better word, thats on the transfer case. I've also seen on this site where there is a gear in there that can go bad too. You may just want to check wire conections etc. before replacing the part itself. Good luck.

its sounds like the square shaft that drives the VSS is rounding off.. eventually it will just quit.. You can insepct it pretty easy, and its about a $45 part at NAPA if it needs replaced.

mine did it and eventually quit, then i looked under the truck and the piece that has all the wires and connects to the gear was dangling, so i'm guessing it being loose caused the hopping and it dangling caused the failure. i just put it back on there and works fine.

On my '92, it was the part between the speedometer cable and the transfer case. It is basically a gear reducer to correct speedometer for different sizes of tires put on at the factory. Mine went out a couple of years ago and I replaced it for about $115. It went out again a few months ago and I just took it off and hooked speedo cable directly to transfer case. The speedometer is slow by about 15 mph but I can live with that. Take it off and bypass it and it will let you know if that is the problem.
