speedo not working--not vss

First off, you guys are great. I am getting all the small problem's fixed on this thing. THe speedo does not work. I searched the old forums and then replaced the VSS and checked the speedo gear (looks good). I have power to the sensor, but I don't know what color wire it is at the dash plug. Where is the dash grounded, I will check it also. After I bought this truck, I realized someone installed a dash out of a gasser, will this effect the speedo? Thanks for the leads. BTW it's a early 93 with an auto.

Speedo works the same on a gasser. It's driven directly off the VSS, the PCM is not involved except to power the VSS. If the trans shifts into OD then the VSS is OK.

Pull the speedo, you will see 3 pins that it plugged into. From top to bottom they are ground, B+, and signal. Check for power across the B+ and ground, and check for continuity between the VSS plug (orange/white wire) and the signal pin.

I have 2 plugs on the back, a L shaped one and a round one. Is there another that goes to the speedo?

You should pull the speedo out of the cluster to check, that way you are checking the circuit board in the cluster as well.

Pull the cluster bezel (the main trim piece), then the cluster mask and lens (the cover over the cluster). Then you will see the screws that hold the speedo in. Remove the screws and pull the speedo out.

everything checks out on the power end but still no speedo. I had found a tech article on repairing a speedo on this sight in the past but I can't find it now. Anybody have a link or other idea?

The only repair I've seen is to the odometer. It sounds like it's time to hit the junkyard in search of a speedo. Gasser trucks are fine.
