Spedo jumps when hitting bumps/no cruise

My little Bro just picked up a 92 4x4 with 200k on the ticker and he is heading over to work on it and work for me.. But the cruise isn't working and the spedo jumps every time he hits a bump he says.. Thinking maybe the VSS on the t-case is malfunctioing.. would that be a good place to start?? He said the sterring column feels good, no crunchy noises, so hopefully the clockspring is ok.. Does the VSS controll the cruise also??

Yep, the PCM uses the VSS to run the cruise.

Well, he made it..So the fun begins..lol So you think the vss would be a good place to start.. Haven't messed with one yet.. He told me even when he's just driving every once in awhile it will just go nuts for a min then it is fine..

I don't have an auto, but I can sure speak to the VSS making the needle jump. Mine sometimes jumped over a bump, but usually had fits on the freeway and would jump then reset to zero then back to seventy. Tighening the VSS helped for a short while - but then gave up totally. Picked one up last year at autozone for about $35 usd. cheap fix. Been steady since.

Mine used to do the same thing, Dad always called it the "Dance of the Impending Ticket".... It would go to actual speed, then drop to zero, then bounce back and forth between the two.

Always seemed like the, well for lack of a better word, the stud (little metal piece that drove the vss) would wear out (round out). A little grinding on an allen wrench was always a quick fix.
