As long as you keep the assemblies matched you can use either setup. The dipstick port on the block is at the same height so the oil level will still be correct as long as the tube matches the dipstick.

Went to the local Freight Liner shop this morning and picked up the goods.
My plan at this point is to clean my oil drainpans, just push the metal piece stuck in the block all the way through, drain the oil, pull the plug out and put the oil back. Only have 1000 miles on 4 gallons of Amsoil, so it's definitely going back in the engine.
