to smoke or not to smoke?
How much smoke should the normal stock engine produce? Just getting used to my CTD that I bought from the dealer in town it is a 1992 w-250 4wd. It has banks power pack badges on it but after looking into it I do not belive that it has it installed. is there a way to measure the tubine housing or a number that would identify it as to 21cm or a 16cm. Right now it only puts out a puff of smoke when I start it up but little after that. I just installed a pyrometer and boost gauge last weekend. The boost rises to 16psi or so only under load and temp goes to 1000 or so. I will start to adjust the VE pump some to get some more power any sugestions on what to do first or how much to push the VE pump. ???

This page has the info on turning up the pump. I've read several postings from guys who have turned the pump up too far and killed it, seems like you're safer to get injectors, then play with the pump just a little bit. That's my plan. The housing size is cast into the backside of the housing, you need a flashlight and a mirror to see it. I've got the 21.

The housing will be either a 21cm or an 18.5cm I believe.

The egt's you mention are, I assume, pre-turbo. If not, then the 1000*F needs to be corrected by roughly 160-170*F more.
You can tweak the timing, the afc diaphram, and the smoke screw without getting into too much trouble... just monitor your EGT's, and your boost as you tweak. They'll tell you when you need to slow down and shift to a more "creep up on it" tuning.
Once you get over what I call the "nervous factor" you'll feel more comfortable tweaking back and forth.

Bob.
