I spent the last few days debating weather or not to fly or drive from philadelphia to tampa. 1000 mile trip...maybe longer on the way home.

Faster
Reliable
No worries, just get on and go
Flying: Cons

Plane crashes usually end up in death
1 layover for 2 hours

Driving: Pros
Somewhat reliable

480-600 Miles per tank
$117.00 to fill up from empty @ $3.90
Driving: Cons
18-20 hour drive
Unexpected mechanical failure
Car accidents
Bad rest stop food, leaving windows down for a few hours.

I almost fully convinced my self that;
A: my truck is reliable enough for the trip (haven't had any problems in months)
B: It will certainly be cheaper to drive down than to fly down(considering 2 people are going)
C: I can burn waste oil and save even more on fuel prices

Let me know what you think, i appreicate the input.

I like to have my own transportation when I get somewhere and airlines treat you like heavy nitrogenous waste material, not to mention the TSA, IMHO of course...Mark

Depends on time available, how much site seeing you can do, how much you enjoy driving, how many CD's you can pack in the truck...


If the weather was really nice, such as in late spring, I'd love to do that trip.

Oh yeah, if you fly some dude is going to feel up your ***** @ the airport. I guess if you like that kind of thing....have fun !

and GOOD POINT on the tolls... i'll just borrow an ez pass ;-)

I think i'm leaning towards the long drive...

 

Can't borrow an ezPASS = $50 VIOLATION for non registered vehicle
Can't get an EZpass for a vehicle over 7000 lbs GVWR
most of the toll roads are the ones that go eat west in Fla
The rest of your ride has no tolls

 

I'd say Road trip.... I've made that treck down 95 several times to Florida.... Don't forget to stop at South of the Border in South Carolina and get some fireworks! LOL

humm...thinking about tolls... im going down i95 so its only $4 in del and $9 in md.

Crobar, i didn't know that about the EZ-pass.
I have mine registered to my first truck and just kept adding vehicles.(only got fined when EZ-pass didn't read, then added the vehicle and no fine :-D)

Never heard about the 7,000 GVWR... we use them ALL THE TIME at work... on truck in excess of up to 5x that. Not to say that its not true.

 

I like the suggestions... i'll at least look them up and see if i wanna stop ;-)

Mine cost me $13 and it is refundable when i return the pass(at least thats what it was then)... and its like $3.00 a month in fees now+ the convenience in not stopping on the highway and fuel i saved was worth it. $35 ever 6 months now instead of 2x a month. (its prepaid, not a monthly, like most people think)

 

If you search the web you can (sometimes) find plane tickets super cheap. My brother and a buddy got round trip tickets from denver to missouri and back for $168.00 each last september. If you end up driving, check all fluids for sure, wouldnt hurt to bring a couple gallons of water or antifreeze.

 

Unless I was 'Grand fathered', you can get an e-pass, at least in Florida. I've got one on my dually, a friend of mine has 3 of them on his dump trucks.

 

You will be in my neck of the of the woods comin by JR and South of the border.

You might as well load up all you spare parts and sell em on the way down cuz it seems like yall notherners have all the hard to find stuff!
