runs poor when cold

We have had a couple of cold mornings below 20 degrees. The truck starts instantly but idles low, below 500 rpm and runs poorly until it is warm. If I hold the gas pedal, keeping the idle at normal speed, it runs fine. I recently turned my fuel in 1 turn and my smoke screw out 1/2 turn. Is the is normal for a CTD or did I screw it up? It runs fine after a few minutes and idles around 750-800 rpm. I have not plugged it in and see if it makes a difference.

Sounds like the KSB is not operating. The KSB solenoid is the thing on the driver's side (NOT the back) of the pump with one wire coming out of it. Next time you start the truck cold, pull that wire off and see if the truck runs different. If there's no change, check to see if there's power (should be around 10v, your test light will glow) on that wire. If there's power, the KSB solenoid is bad. If there's no power, it's either the switch (follow the wire, the switch is in the intake manifold) or there's no power to the switch. The KSB switch shuts off at 90 degrees, so this all has to be done with a cold engine. The engine does not have to be running during the electrical diagnosis, but the key has to be in the run position.

OK wannadiesel, it looks like my my temp sensor is stuck open. Have power to the sensor but none is getting through it to the solenoid. 50.00 at the dealer and 25.00 at Carquest(if they ordered the right thing) Just for grins, what if you jump the switch and power the solenoid all the time? Or maybe install a toggle switch on the dash, kind of like a manual choke for a gasser.

The KSB solenoid advances injection timing by blocking the pump vent. Not a good long term situation. It will destroy the pump (eventually) if you just hot-wire it. The new switch should fix you up right.
