Resetting Idle Without a Tach...Issues?

Hey Guys,

I recently 'turned up the juice' on my truck. Of course, that turned up the idle to the point that I felt bad for my 518 everytime I switched into drive or reverse.

...and of course, that idle screw is impossible to turn...so I used a dremel to take some off the top.

Well, I think it's now too low. When I'm sitting at a stoplight idling, the truck is really vibrating...the 4wd shifter moves about an each in each direction from the shuttering.

So, I'm guessing my idle is now too low.

I plan to turn the power pin up a little to get it back up, but I was wondering if there were a 'rule of thumb' on how to set the idle without a tach.

Thanks!

damon

I use a Briggs & Stratton tach to check the idle speed. Here is a pic, (MODS,not endorsing the seller, just trying to clarify the tool better)

It`s very accurate and simple to use. I got mine through training at an old job I had (Mitsubishi auto tech), we used it to track the source of vehicle vibrations by determining the oscillation frequency using a nomograph.

With an automatic, the limiting factor is how bad the truck wants to creep in gear. Speed it up until it's smooth, but doesn't try to push you through the traffic lights.

If you know anybody who's into R/C aircraft, they will have an optical tach you can use.

I have tachs in both trucks but adjust the idle by feel. Like said above get it high enough not to rattle the trim screws out but not to high for it to bang into gear.

There's a sticky on putting your own low speed adjustment on your truck to turn it up.

Use a small chisel to back off the jam nuts and then get a contortionist to remove the idle screw. You then put it back into place 180 degrees from what it was so you can adjust it from the front.

I just smash my hand with a 5lb hammer and work it in back there.I ducktape a 10mm wrench end on my finger for rigidity.
