Have you thought about going custom paint. Now would be the time. Get a candy color to match your beige interior. Something like candy brandy or a copper color like project copperhead on trucks.

 

Now you are thinking. I LOVE that copperhead color!

 

My all black dually goes in the paint shop in a week, he's going to add pearl silver medium metallic on the sides with the red stripe, i think it'll look 1000 times better than stock, pics will be posted, then it will go on the block, i don't think you have to be scared of custom colors as long as they're readily available or a chip from another production vehicle.

 

Take a look at mine, is that your shade of green? I repainted it last year and considered doing a two tone but couldn't decide what colors to use. Is yours a tan color and do you know the paint code ?

 

The paint on my '91.5 W-250 is just falling off the truck.

How much are you guys paying to do a "proper", decent paint job?

Any thoughts or experiences on Maaco's, or similar companies, quality & durability?

I've heard differing opinions on the "prepping" before painting. Some say that you just need to strip the color coat & then repaint. Others say that you need to strip the paint down to the metal, primer & then repaint. What's the "best" way to do this?

I've had quotes, form private shops, anywhere from $2800-$7000 for a repaint. At $7000, the paint would be worth more than the truck. The Maaco is, of course, much cheaper.

I'm not interested in a "Show Truck" quality paint job but, would like something decent. The truck has to sit outside 24/7 in the AZ. sun. I'm thinking about keeping the truck as I'm the original owner.

I used to sell paint to Maaco a few years back, they use synthetic enamel which is about as good as water color, the lowest grade of paint possible to buy. That particular shop was beyond horrible. Find a shop that uses atleast acrylic enamel, any shop that's worth a crap will also use base/clear urethane, the best money can buy. Had the silver redone on my W250 for 600 bucks not including matierials, that pinstripe from the dealer is real expensive, i think around 250 if memory serves.

 

Mr. Buffalo, I just noticed you said original owner, I recently read somewhere that Dodge will repaint your truck for FREE!!! if it has the typical paint failure problems associated with our trucks, ie...fading, peeling clear coat etc...but only for the ORIGINAL owner, check out your local dealer.

 

I'm looking at almost 4k or so for a whole paint job. I'll be coming up with some. The body shop man said it looks like there was a coverup of some rust on the cab. He will bring that area down to bare metal and redo it. He promises it will come out looking like it did it rolled off the assembly line. I have seen his work and I know it is top notch. I'm going with the green/tan combo. He is also going to re-clearcoat and paint my camper shell.

 

My red paint job cost $4,000 6 or 7 years ago. I bought it from the original owner right after it was painted. Unfortunately the New Mexico UV rays have caused the hood to start to go. The rest of the scratches are my stupid fault
