Removing power steering pump and vacuum pump, 89
Hey guys,
My factory service manual is for the 93, so the vacuum/ power steering pumps are a little different. I'm trying to replace my powersteering pump but I can't get at the top inside nut to remove it from the vacuum pump. So I was going to take the whole assembly since the vacuum pump only has 2 bolts holding it on.
I don't want to force this thing... is it supposed to slide aft after I take the 2 bolts out of the vacuum pump? I tried drifting it out lightly with by hitting a soft peice of wood with a hammer but I saw no progress, and didn't want to damage anything. I don't have to yank the timing cover and pull a gear do I?

Ok, got it off. I beat the heck out of my rubber mallet. Couldn't really get a good swing. tapped a screwdriver between the timing case and the vacuum pump on several spots and FINALLY got it off....
Now, how does this power steering pump couple to the vacuum pump?? I've been beating and prying on this too, but can't get them to seperate. I thought Jim Lane or someone did a writeup on doing his bearings, but all my favorite's are on my computer, and I'm borrowing the little ladies (remind me to wipe the grease off the keyboard )

I'm assuming they attach different than the 93's cause the new pump doesn't look like the one in my FSM.

Ok, found it. I knew Jim wrote something about it, and I knew he had a non I/C truck... I just didn't have my favorites list.
I think I'll get it now. I'll just have to figure out the pitch of the bolt to press it out with now. I do have a puller, I guess I could give it a shot.

Pic didn't load...Here is also a pic of the install. I used 3/8th x 18 threaded rod, 2 washers and a nut, went on like silk. The pipe wrench looks scary, but it is a not so tight press fit and that is 1 tough gear Mark

Terrific pictures Mark, thanks. Especially for the thread of the bolt, I'll have to run in town and grab one since all my nuts and bolts are primarily SAE.
Wish I knew I had to do all this before I yanked it, I find myself caught a little unprepared ...
Do you know if the length of the pushrod for the bottom pod is the same length of the side pod? My bottom pod fell off on the highway! I was able to recover the pod, but didn't find/know to look for the push rod. I have some stainless that is the exact diameter of the side rod and want to make a new one while I"m doing this.

They are the same length, I hope, because I did not keep track of them. I am going to test my vacuum today,but I know I have much more, because it was much harder to spin the gear after the rebuild...Mark

Thanks a bunch Mark. I'll get at making one now, and hopefully have both pumps again. It was doing fine with just 1 suprisingly (But with a new Booster).

It is a bomb proof design, because the push rods actually ride on the bearing not the eccentric. It is kind of a mind bender when you put your fingers into the shaft hole and spin the gear, it doesn't make sense. It is actually the bearing that is eccentric to the gear and the cam lobe itself is only there to back the bearing. The bearing must take quite a beating, because it is bathed in oil and it still failed...Mark
