yeah my dads broke three in his chevy crewcab its not much fun! i would say go with the 14b there a great rear end thats whats in my truck.

I'd say go with whatever you can find cheaper with the gears you want. Probably not going to find a dana 80 with 3.42 gears already in it. Although probably won't find a 14b with 3.2x gears already in it.

Well it looks like most of you guys lean toward the 14B, so I'll start looking for one. I'll try a few junk yards first and craigslist.
What is the width difference vs. the D70? My rims will fit its still also right?

It all depends on what it came out of, if it came out of a srw truck it'll probly be real close and yes your rolling stock will bolt right on

Dana 60........???
Dana 70.........junk
Dana 80.........is real good but weighs 400lbs
what came stock in the 1990 d250 single tire?
and if Dana 70U or 70HD are such junk why do they go for $200-$450 all day
and from what i understand....... Dana 60 and 70U are the SAME INSIDE 70 case is larger = same internal strangth as 60 but more weight (40lbs) and 70HD has the 4in axle tubs = more weight ( another 33lbs)

O don't think the Dana 70's are junk. How many miles do you have on your truck? If it still has the stock rear, it is a Dana 70. They get a bad reputation, like the HX40. People abuse them (pulling and whatnot) and when they break, they just assume it is junk. They weren;t designed for truck pulls, and if you abuse them, then yes, they will most likely break, but if you do what they were meant to do, then I don't think you will have trouble with it.

My 70 had 250,000 miles in it before I started beating the snot out of it, In a stock or mild truck they will last a long time but once you start pulling or drag racing its only a matter of time before the 70 will puke because of the heavy shock load
I'm just saying there are better choices out there for use on High HP trucks
Also the 14b is cheaper to fix and much easier to setup and you can find em anywhere
If I wouldn't have gotten my 80 so cheap My truck would have gotten a 14b or an HO72 heck it still might get a 14b or HO72 when I do a gear change
