I put a Clark 5 speed in my old Ford that shifts like so:

R 2 4
1 3 5

Slightly familiar for some reason.

I never could understand the reasoning behind the horseshoe pattern
Direct is still in the same location in the transmission whether it is an overdrive or not. The clutch gear slides forward on the main shaft to lock it to the input shaft for direct drive. The easiest way to do this is to have the the lever pull back and slide the shift rail forward. To make direct up and to the right (the new RTX pattern, instead of the old RTO horseshoe pattern), there has to be a reversing mechanism added to that shift rail, so the rail slides forward when the shift lever is pushed forward. . .

The only 8LL's I've ever seen only had one range selector. They were roadrangers, behind a big Cummins in S2600 IHC milk trucks.

All the many 8LL I have driven have a deep-reduction button; thus, 5 forwards in deep-reduction, then 5 forwards in low-range, then 5 more forwards in high-range.

During normal driving, when shifting up through the gears, high-range first position is ignored, as it is actually a lower gear than low-range fifth.

I use high-range first a lot when making turns at an intersection or such.
