radiator

Does any one know of a larger radiator that fits in a first gen. I had my radiator flushed and it helped but it still gets hotter than I like. There is room for a four or five core with little mods. Thanks in advance.

Flushing a radiator doesnt necessarily fix a plugged radiator. Try this, start the truck and let the engine warm up long enough for the thermostat to cycle once. Turn the truck off and run you hand down the radiator top to bottom as close to the middle of the core as you can. My guess is it will be hot on the top 2/3s and cold at the bottom 1/3. If so, the radiator has to be plled and rodded out.

What happens is the silicone in the antifreze as well as hard water minerals settle and build up in the lower tubes. I just had mine done again, which is like a every 200K occurance for me.

BTW, if you want pull the fan shroud and fan for easier access to the radiator.

If your truck is non-intercooled you can swap in the crossflow radiator out of an intercooled truck.

Would the intercool rad give me any more area of cooling for the engine?

While you at it change the thermostat and check your fan clutch..

1991 modles are intercooled arent they? Like wannadiesel said, use a 1st Gen I/C radiator, if you have a non Ic unit.

The 91.5 is intercooled not the 91.

Yes I have changed the thrmostate to 180o and the fan clutch is ok. It only gets hot when I pull my fith wheel up long hills.

Doesn't that just indicate a properly working radiator? I thought after only 1 cycle the top 1/2 should be hot/warm and the bottom 1/2 should be cool. The water is being cooled as it flows down, so shouldn't the radiator be cooler on the bottom half after 1 cycle?

The test I mentioned was for a cross flow radiator, which is what I thought he had in a 91. So for 91.5 and later cross flow it would be a accurate means to determine if a radiator is plugged.

On a downflow radiator that would be correct. A crossflow ought to be a pretty uniform temp from top to bottom.

If it has a intercooler it has a cross flow radiator.
91.5-93
