Quietest muffler options? Donaldson p/n?

Guys,

Looking at the Donaldson catalog they list 6Bt engine at say 1150 cfm. But then their mufflers are listed at 3 different inches of mercury back pressures.

I'm reading that the Cummins engine- straight exhaust is about 107 db. I would like to get that down to a peak of ~80 db or so. I thinking of doing the muffler (12-18 db) and add a resenator in front of it for another 3-6 db reduction. Obviously, choose a shorter muffler. 4 inch inlet. Can go 4, or 5 inch exhaust.

I'm running just a modifed stock turbo with the bigger impeller, smaller exhaust housing..

I have 51" muffler on both my '93 & '03. Quiet and no drone. Sorry I don't have part number handy.

I had the 51" Nelson 86713M muffler on my truck for a few days to get inspection. It was definitely a quiet muffler....but then it fell off...somehow......

here is some numbers on it and another link in there that shows what the inside is like.

I laughed and told him that it was a 21-year old mechanical diesel

he let me go, but I would rather avoid a repeat of that stop (since I'm always returning from a local watering hole at that time of night)

@Mike337: thx but I can't access that forum at work

this thread's topic is actually the 51" Donaldson muffler, but bannerd suggested the Hushpower unit

what is the cost of the Donaldson, and does its length interfere with any of the undercarriage?

I saw the topic. I have a Donaldson on the Ramcharger, it is not a quiet muffler IMHO, after reading that thread I will be taking it off for the FTE. In that link you will find many Donaldson owners just running the FTE Resonator now. There are even guys that have tried the muffler/resonator set up only to remove the muffler....just trying to save you a few bucks....

I just went and looked in the parts room to see what we have here (Mack dealer). I found a Donaldson part# m085171 Mack# 2me336b (same muffler) overall length 40"- body length 34" -body diameter 8"- 4" in & out, dealer cost $100.33- over the counter $159.32.

thx Bencie

Hushpower 4" is $180, so a little more expensive

it would be nice to have less noise in the cab

FTE Gets my vote

I built my own 4" exhaust and I am using the FTE 30" Muffler/Resonator to keep things quiet ; it costs approx. $110.00. Heavy duty and simple design.

Here is the link to product description. http://www.ftediesel.com/store/pc/vi...4&idcategory=7

BEnice,

FYI, the m085171 is the loudest of the 4 inch donaldson mufflers.

The hush is probably the most quiet you can get. I've seen people run the FTE after the hush and you can't even hear it(except the whistle of the turbo). Sounds really strange and wild at the same time. I run a diamond eye muffler because I couldn't afford the hush. I figure once that rusts out I might spend the money for peace of mine.

I have the FTE and i wouldnt say its particularly quiet. It totally got rid of all the drone i had and it did tame down the volume but the truck still sounds like a 12v with 4" exhaust. The resonator just brought it to a level where you can talk in the cab. I really like it but i wouldnt say its quiet.

M085421 just put that on my 3rd gen. Can't hear it in the cab unless hooked to the camper and only at about 1900 rpm in a hard pull with the stacks. Wife said it sounds throaty outside. Can't really hear it that well with the windows down. It not the big 51 is the next size down. Good flow and performance.
