i have never had a problem with removing my oil filter. it always goes well without a mess.
i let the oil drain from the pan, then remove the filter from above while standing/kneeling on the front of the truck.
to remove the filter i just punch a nail thru the side and use that as leverage to spin it off, then carefully pull it up and out with a steady hand.
are the first and second gen filters in a much more difficult spot?
