Questions on the steering shaft

Since the thread on the safety issues about the steering wheel coming loose from the shaft after the brogeson shaft was installed, I have spent some time worrying about it and have actually had some strange dreams regarding the issue. Now what I want to know is......from this photo you will be able to see a roll pin that holds the rag-joint adapter thing on to the upper shaft my question is how could it come apart with this roll pin there and that big spring that keeps constant tension on it?. And if this is where it comes apart what is keeping the rag-joint from allowing enough movement to keep it all together regardless of the telescoping action of the bogerson shaft? It did not come loose when there was no shaft hooked to it at all so I don't see how it could come off unless the roll pin was removed. I know someone said you could weld the shaft or whatever but you still have a rag-joint that will allow quite a bit of movement how much I don't know. Do you follow???? am I making sense?

I'm not clear on exactly where it comes apart either, cause I've never had apart to inspect it. But I don't think that's it. i.e., your reasoning seems sound.

It comes apart up inside the truck, not down at the rag joint.

OK, I did not realize it was the upper columb where it separated. From this photo( i did'nt notice before) it looks like he had about 4" of movement before it fell out. Does this seem correct? I am just trying to make sure it never happens to me, and want to be certain that just making the borgi -shaft stable will make it fail safe so I can stop worrying about it.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Just put a tack weld on the Borgeson where it collapses. That will keep it from collapsing in normal use but the weld will break in a wreck.

I used a small set screw so I can remove it easily if I need to work on the steering box or related issues.

That'll do. Blue Loctite on the set screw should help you sleep at night.

This may seem like a stupid reply by a dumb newby but I was having wandering problems and I replaced everything on my 94 Ram 4X4 all the rod ends even the upper & Lower ball (Bearings) joints it still wandered until I was informed about that mickey mouse universal(sort of ) joint next to the steering box input shaft, replaced it with a proper universal joint kit no more wandering solid as can be.
