Question A question for all you drag racers

Ok, this one's for the 4x4 crowd. Are you guys running in 4x4 at the drag strip? I'm a lil' scared of a 4HI launch. Let me know what the norm is on this please.

How's the joints in your front shaft?

I run mine down the strip in 4 HI, no problems, don't even know its in gear. Fasted I've gone is just over 90 and didn't even feel anything on my truck.

Hot Dawg:

I have a 1996 Dodge CTD Ext. Cab Auto 4X4 and YES, I put my transfer case in 4HI on my launches and leave it in 4HI all the way down the track trapping at the end of the 1/4 mile at about 115-119 MPH. Here is a link of how it looks launching on a run I made about three weeks ago at our local dragstrip against a pretty well built 2002 Chevy Camaro SS running open headers against me:

If you don't have billet input and output shafts DO NOT leave with more than about 10lbs of boost off the line though!

Good luck!

When you hit the end of the track, before the turn, take it out of 4wd.

Not a good idea, in a 1st gen you have to come to a complete stop to get it out of 4wd, even then after running hard on asphalt, it most likely won't come out right then. Just take it on around til you're off the track.

I dunno Bill . . ..

I run in 4wd the full pass and shift it to 2wd as I'm just before turning off the track. As fast as . . . say . .. 35mph at that. No problem.

I do strongly suggest your transfer case linkage is tight and in good working order. Fluid in motion.

I can get mine to go in or out at any time.............as long as the hub are in..............tryed to put it in to 4wd, one snowy day with the hubs out and doing about 20 mph Grrrrrrind Grrrrrrrind

I'm running 65 psi in the front and 50 psi, "tire pressure" in the back. It's surprising how easy it is to go in and out of 4wd.

Run it in 4wd and shift to 2wd after crossing the finish line as was suggested above. Mine goes in and out of 4HI without any problems. 4 Lo is another story. If your clutch is borderline now, it will slip bad at the track, especially with a 4wd launch. Ask me how I know.

I have to agree with Dave on this one Bill. In fact all of mine usually refuse to come out of gear unless your moving.

I usually knock mine out of 4wd after I've made the turn onto the return road.

Ok, thanks guys!!! Nice run John P, I wish I could be that fast!

I just replaced my axle shaft U-joints, they were toast. I wouldn't even "Drop the Hammer" in dirt before that. I think I will replace my front drive shaft U-joints before I hit the track though. As far as 4x4 goes, my transfer case shifts good in and out of 4 HI, just a lil tricky to get it out of 4 LO.

Thanks again guys.

Hot Dawg:

My thanks to you and "Flash" for your nice comments! I can tell you both that it has taken me awhile to get to that point and there are still ALOT of Dodge CTD Pickups alot faster than mine too! But, for an old smoky 12 valve with almost 300,000 miles on the truck it does pretty good.
